Case of the Closet
It's time for the annual game of "out the Republican," which gay activists use to shame and scare their political opponents. All in the name of honesty, of course: Documentary Purports to Rip GOP's Closet Doors
They do realize that Ed Koch is a Democrat, right? And that he spent decades as an attention seeking political lightning rod in one of the most media saturated markets in the US? If he is gay, he was damn discreet about it; more discreet than he has ever shown a propensity for being.California GOP Rep. David Dreier and a number of other politicians are the unwilling stars of a controversial new documentary with an explosive premise - it's time to blow open the closet door on prominent politicians who have hidden their homosexuality while actively working against gay causes.
The film "Outrage," which opens today at the Embarcadero Center Cinema in San Francisco, presents interviews and documentation charging that a number of prominent legislators - including Dreier, the U.S. representative from San Dimas (Los Angeles County), Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and former New York Mayor Ed Koch, a Democrat - have remained closeted while publicly opposing legislation on issues such as same-sex marriage, HIV/AIDS funding, and gays in the military.
Kirby Dick, the film's director, told The Chronicle on Thursday that "it's not only the right thing to do, it's the responsibility of journalists and filmmakers to report on hypocrisy wherever they see it.
"And just because it involves gay sexuality does not mean it should be off-limits
As for Drier and Crist, and whomever else...you'll pardon me if I don't collapse on my divan from an attack of the vapors. Drier has been dogged (oooo, baby) by such rumors for years. He is, in fact, the hardy perrennial of "outed" GOP politicians. And yet, his constituents return him to office year after year. Maybe, it's because they honestly don't care who he goes home to every night, and have no interest in following him around to find out. Too bad the Forces of Tolerance don't feel the same way.
