The Age of Sheehan: The Final Days
Cindy Sheehan is on her farewell tour as S.F. protesters urges U.S. to close Guantanamo. I think there was a point to Gitmo, but clearly the drama queens are winning the public relations war. If/when Obama closes Gitmo, we'll see what happens to these people and their array of orange jumpsuits and giant puppets. One hopes they disappear, but it looks like they're having too much fun to do that.
It will also be interesting to see what happens if the Obama administration tries to do what many Gitmo critics have suggested: bring the terrorists to the U.S. and hold them in federal jails or military stockades. Then, Obama may see what happens when real Americans protest (see the Boston busing protests for an example).
On a more serious note, it does appear that Obama does intend to change some things, such as relaxing interrogation and closing Gitmo. No one wants to see another attack, including (I hope) the people who have been calling for such changes since, oh, October 2001. But, the aggressive policies that the Bush administration has pursued has clearly prevented another attack on U.S. soil. If Khalid Sheik Mohammed had to get a little wet to accomplish that, that's fine with me and fine with the vast majority of Americans. If there is another attack in the next 4 years, it will be very easy to link any such atrocity to the relaxed vigilence that Obama apparently intends to implement.
